Larry, I just finished reading your book. I love that you covered the airflow in the flute, and breath control, and the music, sound, and expressions being within you. I love how you covered cultural appropriation. You also gave many resources for the new player. I'm not surprised that you have written such a good book.
To Song-Within, I read through most of what you sent me.
I think it is excellent.
Larry and Vickie are excellent instructors . . . who I met approximately 2 years ago at the Apache Junction Library where I attended one of their workshops, During those years, (they) displayed an amazing, passionate love for the NASF. I have (them) to thank for propelling my journey with the NASF.
Hi Larry, I finished your book. Really well done, it's like a go-to source for beginners and intermediate players, in one location. It's a must read . . . The book covers all the basics as well as more advanced topics such as tuning variables and scales (also) thoughts and opinions by the author . . . The end of the book is an excellent resource that you can go to for more information. This book will put you on the right track on your flute journey.
Sedona - Where our Flute Journey Began in 2013

The booklet “BEYOND THE NATIVE SCALE” (54 pages, approx. 16,000 words) provides a different viewpoint from what you are likely to read in other books about the Native American flute, the most user-friendly instrument. For starters, this booklet is not a “how to play” teaching guide, and does not discuss the many spiritual aspects or physiological benefits that come with playing this instrument. There’s a wealth of information dealing with these topics available online, and in numerous illustrated books. Next, since we are not making or selling flutes, or CD's, or teaching fundamentals and techniques in workshops, or promoting and facilitating flute circles, or organizing flute festivals—all of which we have done—we can be impartial in relating what we learned on our own flute journey. Let's say you wanted to buy a particular model car which was in production for a while, and were interested in learning about its reliability and performance. Would you most likely get complete and accurate information from: factory published sales literature, salesmen at a car dealership, online road tests of a new vehicle, a car mechanic’s opinion, or from your neighbor who just bought one? The most realistic assessment of the experience which that vehicle can provide would be a personal report by someone who owned and drove it regularly for several years, the longer and more miles driven, the better. Finding an honest 10-year evaluation would not be be easy. In writing this book, we are providing an honest 10-year and high mileage evaluation of the Contemporary Native American-Style flute "experience" as we have seen it. It’s easy to be objective about this instrument and its versatility, but trying to gloss over lesser-but-related flute playing issues is not our way. The book's Subtitle "Your Passport to a Different Journey" reflects our observation that more than a few players are on someone else's journey.
Whether you are new to the Native or Native-Style Flute, or already have some experience playing, we hope to encourage you to become more knowledgeable, confident, and expressive in the skill you develop with this instrument.

A quick look at what you will read about!

After spending over a decade actively involved in the Native Flute community we provide you with a different viewpoint.

In 2016 we became flute vendors selling High Spirits Flutes in the Phoenix area, also teaching workshops and facilitating flute circles. In March 2025, we organized the first Native American-Style Flute Festival for the Apache Junction Public Library. We now have over 100 Native American and other ethnic-style flutes.
